Does practice make perfect? Every year, sports teams all across America have weeks out of the year that they spend training for the season to come. There are the dreaded two-a-days at the end of the summer for football season, or there is spring training for baseball teams. All of that preparation is meant to equip everyone with the right tools for the season coming up. Practice doesn't make someone perfect, but practice does help prepare someone. In our Christian lives, does our practice help prepare us for the battles and the trials to come? All of our prep work we have done studying, worshipping, and praying is helping us for the future. This same thought is also a concept seen throughout the Bible, but it is mainly talking about parents preparing their children.
In Deuteronomy 6:7, Moses instructed the Israelites to teach their sons diligently and to do it all the time. Moses was instructing the parents to prepare their children for the season to come.
At the end of Ecclesiastes, Solomon writes to his son, letting him know that he is to fear God and keep His commandments (12:13). Solomon was preparing his son for the season of life he was about to go into.
Solomon also wrote in Proverbs 22:6 that parents are to train up their children so they will be prepared for the season to come.
Paul writes in his letter to the Ephesians that fathers are to bring up the children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (6:4). Paul is telling the parents to prepare their children for the season to come.
Are we preparing our children for the season to come? Are we striving to bring up our children in a life of godliness? Every day we spend with our kids is another practice for them. Our kids are constantly watching us and training themselves by what we do. Parents, when your kids face those various trials, are your kids going to be prepared for them? Be diligent mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa to train up those kids so they will at least have a fighting chance against the world, and all Satan has to throw at them.
